(LOT 163)
c. 1936 Lou Gehrig "Hands" Gripping a Bat PSA Type 1 Encapsulated ACME NEWSPICTURES Photo – Measures Approx. 5" x 7"

The 1936 season would see the Yankees win the World Series for the first time without Babe Ruth, besting their cross-town rival N.Y. Giants in a 6-game contest. Replacing Ruth would be the sensational rookie Joe DiMaggio, with their immortal slugger Lou Gehrig remaining in the clean-up spot and continuing to wreak havoc on overmatched hurlers. The "Iron Horse" would claim his second A.L. MVP award via his remarkable stat line that included 49 round-trippers, 152 R.B.I.'s, .354 batting average and staggering 1.174 OPS! As the perfect testament to his unparalleled strength, presented here is a spine-tingling 1936 photo that depicts a close-up view of his intense batting grip that led to nearly 500 homers over the course of his incredible career.

Donning his road "New York" road uniform, you can literally feel Gehrig's powerful 5" x 7" grip as he prepares to wallop another tape-measure blast into the deepest confines of any ballpark. This captivating illustration is relatively clean, portraying fine contrast and clarity as well as two ultra-large horizontal borders. Its final compliment is the flipside's ACME NEWSPICTURES credit stamp and critical caption that reads: "STRONG WRISTS AND HANDS THAT HAVE BOOSTED LOU NEAR THE TOP OF THE BATTING HEAP. – 8/21/36". An extremely eclectic Gehrig offering, it serves as a steadfast reminder of how his Goliath-like strength terrorized pitchers for 14 full seasons, before the tragic ALS disease broke him down and ultimately claimed his life at the tender age of 37.
