Extremely Rare c.1928 Lou Gehrig & Rogers Hornsby PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Thorne Photo – Measures Approx. 5" x 7" Christy Walsh LOA
One of the scarcest images we have come across, seldom, if at all, have we come across an original Type 1 photo depicting both Hall of Fame legends Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby. This 1928 Thorne image was taken during Spring Training, with the flipside revealing a notation reading: "3/14/28". The 1928 Yankees would ultimately capture their second consecutive World Championship at the end of the 1928 season, once again led by their slugging duo of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig who once again wreaked havoc on American League hurlers. Unfortunately for the Boston Braves, the off-season addition of the premier right-handed hitter Rogers Hornsby would not be enough for them to place better than a seventh-place finish, with the "Rajah" eventually replacing manager Jack Slattery as the Brave's field general. However, Hornsby would not disappoint the Braves fans with his incomparable batting prowess for he would capture his seventh and final National League batting title via his unfathomable .387 mark.

While we have seen a number of 1920's photos capturing both Ruth and Hornsby, this is the first one we have noted that includes both the "Iron Horse" and "Rajah", and its outstanding attributes do not disappoint. Measuring approximately 5" x 7", Hornsby is sporting his new Boston Braves uniform while Gehrig dons formal attire including a neat "polka dot" period-style tie. They are both exhibiting extremely candid smiles with the image depicting fine contrast and resolution. Near-perfect centering between atypical bright white borders, no glaring surface flaws, and a "Thorne Photo" text near the lower right edge complete a magnificent obverse side. As a final exclamation point, the verso reflects the standard "THORNE PHOTO" credit stamp as well as "TEAM, PLAYER and POSITION" categories that have been completed in pencil, respectively, as follows: "Yanks & Braves", Hornsby & Gehrig", "Second & First". A splendid offering portraying two of our National Pastime's greatest all-time hitters, it serves as a steadfast reminder of how the remarkable slugging prowess of Hornsby and Gehrig placed them near the top of the hitting charts throughout the 1920's!
