c.1927 Lloyd "Little Poison" Waner Rookie PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Charles Conlon Photo – Measures Approx. 6" x 8"
In 1926, playing for the Columbia Comers, Hall of Fame centerfielder Lloyd Waner would "light up" the South Atlantic League to the tune of a .345 batting average and .494 slugging percentage that would result in the Pittsburgh Pirates calling him up to the "Big Leagues" for the 1927 season. Nicknamed "Little Poison" and joining his brother Paul Waner ("Big Poison") who had commenced his MLB career with Pittsburgh only a year earlier, Lloyd would certainly not disappoint the Pirate faithful, batting a robust .355 his rookie season. Right-fielder Paul Waner would actually "out-perform" his brother, batting an incredible .380 with that dynamic duo leading the Pirates to the National League Pennant.
Typically playing in Paul's shadow (as evidenced by Lloyd being dubbed "Little Poison"), he still managed to achieve a .316 lifetime batting average while setting a Major League rookie record with his 133 runs scored as well as a National League rookie record with his 223 hits in 1927. Finding rookie year memorabilia for Lloyd Waner is an excruciatingly tough task, substantiating why this remarkable c.1927 Charles Conlon illustration resides as one of his foremost rookie heirlooms. Measuring approximately 6" x 8", it portrays the star centerfielder in a classic portrait pose while exhibiting the finest possible contrast and resolution imaginable. No glaring surface flaws are evident, and the verso includes several significant Charles Conlon pencil notations including his hallowed "Conlon" name, "Lloyd WANER" and "Pittsburgh." A magnificent PSA Type 1 rookie representation of the great "Little Poison", its immense paucity level and breathtaking aesthetics combine to nominate it as a "must have" for any world-class photo enthusiast!
