c.1920s Rogers Hornsby PSA Type 1 Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" - PSA Type I Encapsulation
This outstanding Underwood & Underwood Type 1 photo portrays the great Rogers Hornsby who arguably stands as our National Pastime's greatest all-time right-handed hitter (w/all due respect to Aaron & Foxx). The verso indicates he has just won the American League Pennant, with the Cardinals claiming the top nod in the National League in both the 1926 and 1928 campaigns. While the 1928 Fall Classic would see the Yankees sweep the Redbirds in four straight games, the former 1926 Series would see the mighty New York Yankees fall to the Cardinals in a tightly contested 7-game series. The Yankees were led by their incomparable slugger, Babe Ruth, who finished another sensational campaign by clouting 47 round trippers, knocking in 153 runs and batting a robust .372. Likewise, the Cardinals proudly showcased another hitting star of their own, the great Rogers Hornsby, who was widely considered baseball's foremost hitter via his unfathomable five-year run from 1921 thru 1925 that produced three .400+ batting seasons and a record-setting .401 batting average!

Player/manager Hornsby would eventually lead his Cardinals to the 1926 World Championship, with game 7 being saved by the legendary Grover Alexander who, in the 7th inning of relief, struck out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded while seemingly in the midst of a serious "hangover" from the night before. This PSA Encapsulated Type 1 photo depicts "The Rajah" finishing his classic batting swing that terrorized pitchers throughout the 1920's. The 7" x 9" image reveals absolutely brilliant contrast and crystal-clear clarity, with the borderless illustration emulating an almost "3-D like" resolution and a razor-sharp perimeter. No obtrusive flaws are evident and the flipside reflects the critical Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as a pencil notation indicating the Cardinals have just captured the "AL Pennant". Obviously, an erroneous notation, Hornsby's St. Louis club won the "NL" pennant (inadvertently written "AL"), but there is no mistake in placing this photo near the top of the pile as one of the most remarkable Hornsby batting photos on the planet! - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation
