(LOT 113)
1927 Murderer's Row Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth & Tony Lazzeri PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 6-5/8" x 8-1/2" (Includes PSA Type I LOA)

Only a handful of photos could possibly better define the New York Yankee's 1927 dominance than this Type I original offering of the nucleus of the team's immortal "Murderer's Row" including from "left to right": Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and Tony Lazzeri. These three iconic figures spearheaded the Murderer's Row unparalleled hitting attack (along with Bob Meusel and Earl Coombs), dominating pitchers at a monumental level that led to 2 consecutive World Championships in 1927 and 1928. The legendary 1927 New York Yankees will forever be arguably considered "the greatest team in baseball history!"

Led by Babe Ruth's 60 home runs and Lou Gehrig's MVP season, "Murderer's Row" paved the way for the Yankees winning an amazing 110 games against only 44 loses, literally "cake-walking" to the American League pennant behind the wizardry of HOF manager Miller Huggins. In almost "anticlimactic" fashion, the Yankees would eventually claim their second world championship by easily sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates in an uncontested four games in the Fall Classic. Measuring approximately 6-5/8" x 8-1/2, the reverse side caption reveals that the image was taken directly after the Yankees clinched the 1927 American League pennant, while also outlining how the Yankees claimed first place from opening day straight thru the season.

Stubbornly defying "Father-Time", the virtually immaculate black & white central image reveals crystal clear clarity and near-perfect contrast, with Gehrig, Ruth and Lazzeri all portraying stoic poses and looking directly into the camera as the Iron Horse leans on his period-style lumber. All the original gloss is still intact, the white borders are relatively clean, no glaring surface flaws are apparent and the verso includes the critical Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as the critical aforementioned caption that truly tells the story of this momentous image: "YANKEES WIN AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT AFTER TAKING LEAD AT START AND HOLDING IT THROUGHOUT SEASON – NEW YORK - After making a runaway race of it all season, the Yankees won the American League pennant.

They took the opening series of the year from the Athletics, of Philadelphia, and held the lead until the end; their victory was due mainly to the heavy hitting of "Babe" Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and other members of the team; the pitching staff is also considered one of the best ever assembled; Miller Huggins is the manager." As previously stated, after Underwood & Underwood struck this breathtaking image in front of the Yankee Stadium dugout, the Yankees would move onto the World Series and crush the Pirates in four straight games, staking a bold claim as our National Pastime's greatest team to ever grace a baseball diamond. Indeed, this brilliant image literally defines the nucleus of that incomparable 1927 squad, with the "Sultan of Swat", "Iron Horse", and "Poosh 'Em Up Tony" wreaking havoc on opposing hurlers at an alarming level, ultimately leading to their remarkable batting accomplishments and the momentous significance of this world-class offering!
