(LOT 107)
c.1910's Walter Johnson PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Ostrom Photo – Measures Approx. 7-3/4" x 8-1/2" – PSA Type 1 LOA

Most historians agree that Walter Johnson resides as baseball's greatest all-time pitcher. The "Big Train" racked up a staggering 417 wins and 113 career shutouts to support that claim, with the "Weiser Wonder" beginning his MLB career in 1907 with the Washington Senators. By the time the first decade of the 20th century elapsed, Johnson had clearly etched his name among the game's finest pitchers via his blazing side-winding fastball that was virtually unhittable. From 1907 thru 1909, he produced microscopic-like E.R.A.'s of 1.88, 1.65 and 2.22, tallying his first 25-win season in 1910. As a testament to Johnson's early success, presented here is a spectacular PSA Type 1 Walter Johnson photo that portrays the iconic twirler donning his classic Washington Senators baseball sweater during what appears to be the circa 1910's era.

Measuring approximately 7-3/4" x 8-1/2" the sepia-toned photo was issued by "OSTROM" with their standard marking situated near the lower right edge as well as a "WALTER JOHNSON" text affixed to the lower left quadrant. Johnson appears to be gazing into an unknown future that would ultimately lead to him being regarded as our National Pastime's all-time "king of the hill". Fine resolution and contrast highlight this image that includes some stray/modest surface abrasions, a vertical crease that extends from the right lower edge towards the upper edge, a significant lower right corner chip, a minuscule soiling spot on Johnson's chin and a few additional corner chips (upper and lower left corners), with all of these flaws rendered virtually negligible due to their diminutive size. Of utmost significance is the critical "Big Train" central image that has remained basically unscathed, with this Walter Johnson heirloom truly residing as one of his most eclectic illustrations!
