(LOT 36)
Extraordinary 1911 Ty Cobb E94 George Close Candy (SGC NM+ 7.5) – "1 of 1"; Highest Graded SGC Example!

In 1911, the George Close Company of Cambridge, Mass. released a very popular candy set with 30 different subjects that included six possible color backgrounds (gold/yellow, red, hunter green, purple, olive green, and blue). Similar to virtually all pre-WWI sets, the most popular and valuable subject is the immortal Tyrus Raymond Cobb, still the owner of baseball's highest lifetime average (.366) and arguably the greatest five-tool ballplayer to grace a major league baseball diamond. It is with distinct pleasure that we now offer what is undoubtedly one of Ty Cobb's toughest issues, the E94 yellow/gold background George Close Candy subject in a spectacular SGC NM+ 7.5 holder.

Its amazing high-grade stature places it as the undisputed finest "1 of 1" SGC encapsulated example, with only a single PSA 8 specimen besting this remarkable cardboard gem! The immortal "Georgia Peach" wore out pitchers over his unparalleled playing career and was one of five players chosen as a prestigious 1936 Hall of Fame charter member. His uncanny batting prowess, fleet footed base-running skills, sensational outfield play all combined to substantiate his inaugural selection to Cooperstown, New York, with the fiery Cobb winning an unfathomable 12 American league batting titles in a 13-year span including 9 consecutive seasons. Synonymous with Ty's legendary stature is this incredible candy card treat that likewise stands tall on the SGC census report as the finest of its kind. His classic fielding-pose also depicted on his E93 and E98 issues portrays a larger superimposed image, emanating crystal-clear clarity and an imposing array of gray hues emanating from his Detroit Tigers knit sweater and classic cap.

The highly coveted yellow/gold tinted background is virtually immaculate, with the sparkling image portraying near-perfect centering between four dazzling white borders. Pinpoint corners, impeccable-like surfaces and a super clean checklist (w/Ty Cobb listed as the 15th subject from the top) all support the near-impossible technical assessment that most likely falls short of a "NM/MT 8" grade due to an ever so slight "ding" situated near the upper right corner tip. The "best of the best" SGC encapsulated E94 Cobb, it conjures up vivid memories of how this unparalleled ballplayer stood "heads and heels" above virtually all of his peers, with its miraculous 7.5 assessment ironically residing as the perfect testament for Cobb's superior standing among our National Pastime's greatest players!
