(LOT 143)
1929 Hack Wilson Signed Canceled Check BB HOF'er Died 1948 RARE PSA/DNA

Wilson was built like a beer keg and not entirely unfamiliar with its contents. With 190 pounds of muscle packed into his five foot six inch frame, Wilson briefly reigned as the National League's premier slugger, posting his greatest season in 1930 when he led all batters with fifty-six home runs and an astounding 191 runs batted in, a mark which stands to this day as the greatest tally ever posted. Presented is a very rare personal check from 1929 written to The North Park Hotel for $25.00 , utilized as Wilson was beginning his slow alcoholic slide toward ineffectiveness and, ultimately, an early death at age forty-eight.

This is the first example we've ever handled from the elusive Hall of Famer, and the fourth to appear at major auction in the past dozen years. The check withdraws twenty-five dollars cash from the Hamilton State Bank of Chicago , Illinois, and is filled out entirely in his hand and signed "L.R. Wilson" on the signature line. Only a small part of a stamp hitting the "L" & "R" and not particularly distracting. Bank punch coding likewise stays clear of Wilson's signature. A fine example of a true hobby rarity. Authenticated and Slabbed by PSA/DNA.
