(LOT 112)
1938 A.L. All-Star Team in Dugout - PSA Type I Encapsulated Central Press Association - Measures Approx. 7" x 9"

The 1938 All-Star game was played at Cincinnati's Crosley Field on July 6, 1938, with the National League stars besting the A.L. squad by a 4-1 score. Johnny Vander Meer would get credit for the win while Yankees Hall of Fame southpaw Lefty Gomez took the loss before 27,000+ enthralled fans. This ultra-obscure photo reveals a large number of the American League players in the visitor dugout, with the most notably evident A.L. stars being Jimmie Foxx and "Joltin" Joe DiMaggio (3rd & 4th from the left).

While we do not see Lou Gehrig, he was indeed a member of that revered team, one of an incredible 8 New York Yankees who were part of the 1938 A.L. All-Star club (Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dickey, Ruffing, Gomez, J. Murphy & Mgr. Joe McCarthy). Measuring approximately 7" x 9", this 82-year old marvel has managed to retain a majority of its original outstanding aesthetics, most notably the brilliant clarity and relatively clean obverse side surface that reveals no glaring blemishes. The verso's Central press Association credit stamp is the final superlative to one of the scarcest mid-summer illustrations you will ever come across! - PSA Type I Encapsulation
