Yankees Pay tribute to Babe Ruth's Passing on August 16, 1948 – ACME NEWSPICTURES Type 1 Photo - Measures Approx. 6" x 9" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

Monumental to say the least, this absolutely captivating photo portrays the New York Yankees team paying a solemn tribute to the passing of the incomparable George Herman "Babe" Ruth on August 16, 1948. Indeed, that fateful August day, America would lose one of its most celebrated heroes as the "Sultan of Swat", only 53 years of age, would succumb to the throat cancer he had been battling for several years. Only two months earlier, on June 13th, Ruth suited up in his iconic #3 Yankee uniform for the final time when a deeply saddened packed house at Yankee Stadium watched the Bambino pay his final tribute to an adoring fan base, leading to the exalted Nat Fein "Babe Bows Out" photo. While the "Babe" was now gone forever, he would certainly not be forgotten, with his unparalleled legacy surely echoing for eternity.

This incredible photo was taken on August 16, 1948 at New York's Polo Grounds as the Yankees and Giants just happened to be partaking in their annual Mayor O'Dwyer Trophy game that fabled day. Donning their "New York" road uniforms, the Yankees are standing with caps held over their heavy hearts in a moment of silence to pay respect to the "Babe". Emanating outstanding contrast and clarity, you can clearly see some of the legendary Yankees in the visiting dugout including Hall of Famers Yogi Berra (2nd from left) and "Joltin" Joe DiMaggio (12th from the left). The well-centered 71-year old image shows little ill effects, and the flipside reveals a significant caption that provides details for this melancholy event. A remarkable 6" x 9" heirloom struck by the renowned ACME NEWSPICTURES, it proudly stands as a sheer testament to the utmost respect and adoration a Nation felt for George Herman Ruth, whose unequivocal diamond exploits unquestionably place him as our National Pastime's greatest all-time player!
