(LOT 683)
1936 World Series Game#1 – Lou Gehrig Batting – Associated Press - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This outstanding 7" x 9" PSA Type I photo portrays Yankee legend Henry Louis Gehrig fouling off a Carl Hubbell opening game pitch in the second inning of the 1936 World Series at the Polo Grounds. In 1936, baseball mania rippled through the city of New York with both the Yankees and Giants having clinched their respective pennants and ready to square off for a 13-year rematch of the 1923 World Series. In typical fashion, Lou Gehrig was the key Yankee force who along with sensational rookie Joe DiMaggio, helped lead the Yankees back to the top of their division. Regarding the Iron Horse, his legendary feats require no introduction with his unparalleled wallops, string of 13 consecutive 100+ R.B.I. seasons and legendary consecutive games played streak fully intact when this photo was taken at the Polo Grounds on September 30, 1936. Although the Giants would claim this Game 1 victory by a 6-1 score behind the superlative pitching of Carl Hubbell, the Yankees would ultimately win the championship by besting the Giants 4 games to 2.

The Fall Classic would see Gehrig wallop two round-trippers and knock in 7 runs, with this being the first of four consecutive championships for the Bronx Bombers. The photo itself exhibits immaculate-like clarity and near-perfect contrast, as Gehrig looks back to see his foul ball and Ott gracefully chat before game-time. The image reflects Gehrig wearing his road "New York" jersey, and no obtrusive flaws are evident on either side. The final compliment is the verso's critical 9/30/36 caption detailing Gehrig's at-bat as the "Iron Horse" fouls off Hubbell's third itch in the top of the second inning. A superb memento from the classic 1936 World Series featuring New York's finest, it rekindles memories of how the Yankees fearless "Captain" (so eloquently dubbed the "Home Run Clouter" on the flipside caption) led this remarkable team to an abundance of championships via his unequivocal leadership and batting prowess!
