(LOT 664)
c.1920's Babe Ruth & Walter Johnson Original Type I Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I Encapsulation

Here is one you don't see very often! This magnificent image depicts baseball's greatest all-time hurler Walter Johnson standing alongside none other than our National Pastime's finest player ever, George Herman "Babe" Ruth. While PSA has not determined a definitive year (labeling it c.1920's), we can only assume that the Bambino is likely paying Johnson a pre-game visit before the start of one of the 1924 World Series contests that would ultimately result in the Washington Senators and Johnson capturing their only World Series championship. Dapper as always, the "Sultan of Swat" is donning his elaborate period-style formal attire while the "Big Train" reveals his Senators uniform, with the seldom surfacing illustration portraying crystal clear clarity and near-perfect contrast.

No obtrusive creasing or paper loss is evident within the central image, however, the image is somewhat compromised by several "FILE COPY – DO NOT REMOVE" embossments slightly evident across the image's central region (these embossments were utilized on many of the photos issued by Underwood & Underwood). Major blemishes include some severe areas of chipping along the borders and upper corners, as well as a diminutive tear situated near the upper right border (directly to the right of Ruth's left shoulder). The verso includes the critical Underwood & Underwood violet stamps, the final superlative for a photo that arguably portrays baseball's pinnacle slugger and twirler, and one that rarely surfaces revealing both of these bona-fide immortals!
