(LOT 621)
Outstanding c.1910's Christy Mathewson Portrait Image – Underwood & Underwood Type 2 Photo - Measures Approx. 4" x 5" - PSA Type 2 Encapsulation

This magnificent Christy Mathewson c.1910's photo portrays Matty in a classic portrait pose as he showcases his period-style pinstripe Giants uniform. Encapsulated as a PSA Type 2 photo, what still places it as an extra special illustration is that it was generated during the SAME decade from the original negative. Indeed, most "Type II (second generation) photos are re-struck decades AFTER, with this seemingly "timeless" image still considered a "period" photo that can literally send a shiver down ones' spine via the Mathewson headshot illustration. The "Lord" of all early 20th century hurlers, the immortal Christy Mathewson began his illustrious career in 1900 with the New York Giants after being traded to the New York club from the Cincinnati Reds for star hurler Amos Rusie.

In 1901, the incomparable 'Matty" would post the first of his thirteen "20-win" seasons, and from 1903 to 1905, compiling three-consecutive 30+ win seasons, while posting a microscopic 1.28 E.R.A. in 1905. The 1905 season would ultimately end with the Giants claiming their first 20th century World's Championship by besting Connie Mack's Athletics in a five-game contest. It was in that Fall Classic that Mathewson would achieve the seemingly impossible task of tossing three complete-game shutouts against the might A's, prompting Mack to boldly claim: "Christy Mathewson is the greatest pitcher I ever saw. It was a pleasure to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you"! The "Christian Gentleman" was hero to a seemingly countless number of young aspiring baseball fans, ending his career with an astounding 373 wins (N.L. record tied w/Grover Alexander) and remarkable 2.13 E.R.A.

Measuring approximately 4" x 5", this Underwood & Underwood offering depicts superb contrast and registration, with several diagonal creases situated near the lower quadrants as well as a few stray wrinkles along the right border. The verso reveals a pencil notation reading: "Baseball – Giants – Sept. 30, 1912 – Christie Mathewson". We cannot imagine a finer testament to the "Christian Gentleman's" iconic legacy than a world-class 1910's image of this immortal Cooperstown inductee, and would highly advise that you jump aboard the "Big-Six" express and ride this revered heirloom directly to the winner's circle!
