(LOT 614)
Jimmie Foxx Type 1 Image used for his 1926-'29 Rookie Card – International Newsreel - Measures Approx. 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This extraordinary c.1920's Jimmie Foxx photo reveals the immortal first baseman in his most celebrated fielding pose extant; the exact image utilized for his seldom surfacing 1926-'29 Rookie Exhibit card! It is no secret that the one of the hobby's most revered collecting angles is Type 1 HOF photos representing that player's highly coveted rookie card. Although he first played with the Athletics in 1925, Foxx played in only 36 games his first two season, with the slugging first baseman increasing that number to 61 games in the 1927 season. The 1928 campaign would mark Foxx's first relatively full season as he partook in 118 games, belting 13 round-trippers and posting a stellar .328 batting average. Foxx was now "here to stay", and it would make perfect sense that the renowned Exhibit Supply Co. issued his inaugural card for either the 1928 or 1929 season (not 1926 or 1927).

PSA has dubbed this ultra-rare image a 1930 photo which is consistent with their policy regarding an original Type 1 illustration typically required to being issued within a 2-year period of the original negative. The 5-1/2" x 7-1/2" borderless image itself is absolutely brilliant, with the somewhat sepia-toned Foxx fielding pose eluding any serious flaws and emanating spectacular resolution and a somewhat darker contrast. You can literally feel Foxx's intensity as the iconic first sacker scoops up a groundball in flawless fashion, with the verso revealing an extremely light International Newsreel credit stamp. Indeed, this seemingly timeless offering exhibits one of our National Pastime's finest sluggers, and along with Hornsby & Aaron, many baseball historians consider Jimmy Foxx one of the three greatest right-handed hitters in baseball history.

Nicknamed "The Beast" because of his supernatural-like power, Foxx terrorized pitchers to the tune of 534 lifetime home runs, was a triple-crown winner in 1933, and along with Gehrig, knocked in a record 100 or more runs in 13 consecutive seasons. As a member of Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, in 1929 Foxx would truly "break out" as the Goliath-like slugger belted 33 round trippers, knocked in 133 runs and posted an outstanding .354 batting average; leading his Athletics to their first World Championship since 1913. An extremely obscure image seldom surfacing for the taking, it rekindles memories of how this young budding superstar would eventually become one of baseball's mightiest all-time hitters, with this ultra-significant offering residing as one of the few "XX" rookie exhibit card images available for the taking!
