(LOT 96)
1909 T206 Addie Joss "Portrait" – Sweet Caporal 150 Subjects/Factory 30 (PSA NM/MT+ 8.5) - "1 of 2" PSA Listed Sweet Caps; Nothing Graded Higher!"

The beloved right handed Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame twirler Addie Joss is one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball history with his microscopic 1.89 E.R.A. standing as the second lowest figure in baseball history (behind Ed Walsh's all-time 1.84 E.R.A.). Author of two no-hitters, in 1908 Joss tossed a perfect game against the Chicago White Sox when he bested the great Ed Walsh 1-0 in one of the greatest pitched games in baseball history. Joss cards hold a special place with pure vintage collectors since he tragically passed away in April 1911, the victim of spinal meningitis. Strikingly similar to Lou Gehrig's legacy, Addie Joss will always be best remembered for his sudden and tragic death, with its unforeseen circumstances far surpassing his incredible accomplishments as one of our National Pastime's finest hurlers.

No wonder collectors actively seek his most cherished cardboard artifacts with none more popular than his T206 portrait example. One of those lofty technically assessed copies is presented here, a remarkable PSA NM/MT+ 8.5 "portrait" Sweet Caporal 150 Subjects specimen of the immortal Hall of Fame twirler Addie Joss. Currently, PSA's "pop" chart indicates that this is one of two Sweet Caporal specimens with nothing graded higher! This Addie Joss jewel depicts a brilliant Carl Horner portrait-pose with "world class" eye appeal. The illustration exhibits bright facial hues and along with a pristine like Cleveland uniform, the pristine-like central image is affixed to a radiant yellow background.

Atypically, the classic pose reflects near-perfect centering between four blinding white borders. Scintillating corners tips, razor sharp edges and an impeccable surface complete one of the most astounding T206 obverse sides we have ever encountered, and most would attest to the fact that it appears as if this cardboard marvel was just pulled from a cigarette pack. Likewise, the verso's Sweet Caporal Cigarette 150 Subjects advertisement presents itself in an astounding manner with its robust red text stealing the show. Unquestionably, this Cooperstown worthy offering resides as one of the finest tobacco cards extant via its miraculous aesthetics that have remained nearly immaculate over a century of time!
