(LOT 25)
1958 Topps #66 Bobby Hull Rookie PSA 8 NM-MT

The final card of the 1958 Topps Hockey set just happens to stand as one of the lowest "High-Grade" Pop subjects for any Hockey Hall of Famer. Indeed, the Bobby Hull #66 "Rookie Card" subject in the 1958 Topps set has only been joined by 6 other specimens with a paltry 2 examples graded higher! Courtesy of Memory Lane, one of those seldom surfacing PSA NM/MT 8 Hull rookies is now presented to the collecting community in what we consider a grand and near-impossible opportunity to capture this ever-elusive card. Its celebrated stature among elite hobbyists is substantiated by a PSA 8 example realizing a staggering $84,000 some 2+ years ago in a public auction, a bona-fide testament to the hallowed standing of this true cardboard masterpiece.

The represented player, Bobby Hull, easily resides as one of Hockey's most significant all-time players, with the winger's iconic status secured by his incredible 913 goals and 1808 total points he tallied over his extensive 24-year career in both the NHL (Chicago Blackhawks) and WHA (Winnipeg Jets). Along with Bobby Orr, he was one of the fastest skaters in professional hockey, and the three-time Art Ross trophy winner (most league points) played on a remarkable 12 All-Star teams. It is for these reasons that collectors are captivated by Bobby Hull's most esteemed cardboard issues, with NONE more critical than his inaugural 1958 Topps subject.

The card itself portrays a breathtaking portrait image of the young budding superstar, with Hull not realizing about the sensational career he is about to embark on as he dons his classic red hued Blackhawks jersey. "Pack-fresh" surfaces, brilliant lime green and yellow background colors and a relatively well-centered image (partially favoring the lower right edges) complete a near-immaculate obverses side, with the verso likewise retaining a majority of its original 61-year old attributes. An outstanding testament to Hull's immortal legacy, it conjures up memories of how this "electric" left-winger could skate past virtually any of his peers and place the puck in the net nearly better than anyone who ever put on professional hockey skates!
