(LOT 937)
Barney Dreyfuss Typed Letter Signed Feb. 1911 BB HOF Pirates Owner Wagner Content JSA/LOA

2008 Baseball Hall Of Fame Inductee, Barney Dreyfuss, writes a letter to 1945 Baseball Hall Of Fame Inductee Fred Clarke on February 11th, 1911. Over a century old, Dreyfus's goal was to "acquaint you (Fred Clarke) with some facts regarding Wagner". Dreyfuss, referring to Wagner as the "Dutchman", goes on to explain to Clarke that Wagner decided he didn't want to play 3rd base and that he would be 2 weeks ahead of the team in Hot Springs but wanted to play 1st base because "he could do better there than any other position". "He cannot select his own job, nor can he get $10,000 for playing 1st base" said Dreyfuss. At the time, Fred Clarke was managing the Pirates for Pittsburgh owner, Barney Dreyfuss. Letter also talked about the "Goshen Schoolmaster", Sam Leever and how Sam was trying to tell Wagner "hold out and not play with the Pittsburgh Club this year, but to go with him into the airship business".

Dreyfuss also mentions that, "it was Sam Leever who for years we have carried at a big salary without any adequate return in services". Wagner also claimed he was too old to play shortstop at 35 years old. Dreyfus's response, "but inasmuch as he is only 35 years next Friday, while Wallace of St. Louis is 38 years old, I don't believe his contention will hold water". Such incredible content preparing Clarke to "combat it when the time comes". Dreyfuss had incredible trust in Clarke as Clarke was not only a player on the 1909 World Series Championship Team, he also managed them. A rare opportunity to obtain such an eloquent letter from one Baseball Hall Of Famer to another talking about a 3rd Baseball Hall Of Famer! JSA LOA included.
