(LOT 196)
"Unique for the Grade" 1959 Topps #464 Willie Mays Catch Makes Series History (PSA Gem Mint 10) – The SOLE PSA "Gem Mint 10" Example!

One of the most memorable moments in World Series, the "Say Hey Kid's" miraculous catch literally transcends time, and in 1959, the prestigious Topps Chewing Gum Company chose to celebrate Mays remarkable achievement by placing the catch on their "Baseball Thrills" #464 subject. Synonymous with that iconic "catch" is this 1959 Topps #464 Baseball Thrills Mays offering that just happens to be the SOLE PSA Gem Mint 10 example extant! Indeed, PSA has encapsulated nearly 1,900 of these highly coveted subjects with this awe-inspiring marvel the only one to achieve the hallowed "10" assessment. Substantiating the "1 of 1" grade is a virtually "dead centered" image that portrays three "stop-action" poses of the spectacular Willie Mays catch.

From left to right, the first image depicts the actual "over the shoulders" basket catch; the second pose reveals Mays whirling around to begin his throw; and the third illustration exhibits the "Say Hey Kid" releasing the throw into the infield with seemingly "all of his might" in order to prevent the runner from potentially scoring by tagging up two bases. The overall image portrays breathtaking clarity, contrast and hues, with the lower white "MAYS' CATCH MAKES SERIES HISTORY" caption affixed to a robust red text box. Four snow white borders, virtually perfect 90-degree corners, flawless surfaces and a pristine verso that includes a detailed "bio" of the famous catch all combine to justify the "one of a kind"" assessment. Willie Mays' immortal moment when he snared Vic Wertz's mammoth blast in game#1 of the 1954 World Series may never repeat itself again, and likewise, hobbyists may never witness another 1959 Mays "Greatest Thrills" PSA Gem Mint 10 "unique for the grade" subject that proudly stands alone as the undisputed "best of the rest" marvel on the planet!
