(LOT 167)
"Unique for the Grade" 1954 N.Y. Journal American Willie Mays (PSA NM-MT 8)

One of the most nebulous post WWII issues is the 1954 New York Journal American cardboard premiums distributed at New York newsstands to promote the long extinct New York Journal newspaper. The 59-subject set includes players from the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees with serial numbers relating to the daily drawings affixed near the obverse side's lower edge and the player's respective team schedule posted on the verso. Measuring approximately 2" x 4", examples seldom surface in the hobby with high-grade copies considered extremely rare. Justifying that notion is this Willie Mays PSA NM-MT 8 offering that has only been joined by a meager 6 other specimens as the highest graded example! Along with the iconic Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson, the Wilie Mays subject resides as one of the most desirable and valuable cards in this eclectic set and why not?

The "Say hey Kid" could hit, run, field, and throw as good or better than anyone who ever graced a baseball diamond, substantiating why many historians still rank him as one of our National Pastime's greatest "5-tool" all-time players. His exquisite black & white portrait image affixed to the upper region is nearly immaculate, as if this cardboard scarcity was just handed to a standard New Yorker making their daily pit stop to the local newsstand. All of the black and red print is bold and vivid, with the four corners exhibiting extremely sharp tips. Clean surfaces and an outstanding verso revealing the New York Giants home schedule complete this 65-year-old marvel that suffices as one of the most eclectic post-war type cards on the planet!
