(LOT 36)
1909 T206 Ray Demmitt "St. Louis" – Polar Bear (PSA VG 3)

Presented here is a fine T206 PSA "VG 3" Ray Demmitt 'St. Louis' version that stands as one of the cornerstones of the T206 "Monster" set. The renowned T206 gathering is virtually impossible to assemble for most advanced enthusiasts due to the four ultra-expensive cards to obtain including Wagner, Plank, the Magie error and Doyle variation. After these prestigious four, the two most sought-after variations include the St. Louis Demmitt and O'Hara versions produced by the Polar Bear cigarette company. After Demmitt was traded from the New York Giants to the St. Louis Browns of the American League, only the Polar Bear company reflected this change in their tobacco issues. All other factory issues continued printing Demmitt in a New York Giants uniform, and a significant T206 variation was born!

The limited number of St. Louis Demmitt's now command significant dollars, and are amongst the toughest and most valuable T206's to capture. This superb PSA 3 Demmitt provides aesthetics consistent with the grade including a crystal clear "Hands on Hips" pose as Demmitt dons his St. Louis Browns uniform. The image reveals excellent "side-to-side" centering and somewhat favors the upper edge. No major surface blemishes are evident, the Polar Bear back includes only a few modest tobacco stains, and accounting for the grade is primarily even corner wear. Seldom surfacing for the taking, this PSA 3 Demmitt St. Louis obscurity would make a splendid addition to any sophisticated tobacco compilation, enabling the enthusiast to inch one critical step closer towards the T206 520/524 subject finish line!
