(LOT 26)
1903 E107 Breisch Williams Hobe Ferris "Type 1" (SGC Fair 1.5) – "1 of 1"; 3 Graded Higher

The 1903/1904 Breisch-Williams cardboard marvels are widely considered the landmark 20th century baseball card issue, eventually leading to the myriad of 'E' and 'T' cards that would be produced before WWI. Due to their scarcity and severe condition sensitivity, elite collectors scramble to seize even low-grade examples, with this eye pleasing SGC Fait 1.5 Hobe Ferris "Type 1" scarcity one of only six encapsulated examples on the COMBINED SGC and PSA census reports (6/SGC; 0 PSA)! Ferris will forever be remembered by Red Sox fans as the hero of the first World Series. In the clinching game, the popular second baseman drove in all three Boston runs as the Sox shutout the Pirates for the title.

The classic Carl Horner black & white portrait pose is crystal clear and portrays near perfect contrast, with the image modestly favoring the left edge. Rounded corners and several creases, one of which compromises his stoic portrait image, account for the technical assessment, with the verso revealing the classic E107 "One of a hundred and fifty prominent Baseball players" typography, and some scattered toning/soiling. While not the finest preserved example, its sheer existence and/or paucity level unquestionably takes precedence here for with only a meager five other encapsulated copies, finding any E107 Ferris is an excruciating challenge!
