(LOT 725)
1909 Honus Wagner E92 Dockman & Sons "Throwing" Version (PSA 4)

In 1909, the John Dockman & Sons Gum Co. included 40 different possible baseball players with their brand product. As is the case with most pre-WWI baseball cards, one of their most prestigious and valuable subjects was both the throwing and batting Honus Wagner cards, with his iconic throwing pose presented here in a superb PSA 4 holder. Considered scarce at this seldom-surfacing mid-grade plateau, only 9 other examples have managed to achieve this assessment with a mere 8 specimens graded higher! Due to the unparalleled prestige of his "Holy Grail" T206 subject, Honus Wagner's hobby standing needs no introduction, with many of his early 20th century cards highly desirable. Wagner is considered the greatest shortstop in baseball history, and his all-time stature coupled with the mystique of his T206 heirloom has elevated virtually all of his pre-WWI cardboard treasures to world-class status.

Widely coveted by many elite enthusiasts is this 1909 Dockman & Sons Wagner "throwing" offering that depicts a splendid image of the seemingly timeless shortstop. What makes this card so special is the sparkling Wagner illustration affixed to a brilliant background including a tranquil array of sky blue, yellow orange and green grass colored hues. Superb centering, and no obtrusive surface flaws likewise contribute to the rather scarce assessment; with even corner wear preventing a higher grade. The verso includes the popular "JOHN H. DOCKMAN & SONS" advertisement with the bold black print affixed to a relatively clean white surface. Along with Cobb, Honus Wagner was widely regarded as the "superman" player of his era, justifying why this early 20th century "E" card would make a fine addition to any superior Wagner collection!
