(LOT 122)
c.1930's Lou Gehrig Holding Bats Type I Original Photo Measures Approx. 8" x 10" PSA Encapsulated Type 1

The legacy of Henry Louis Gehrig is virtually unparalleled in Major League History, with the "Iron Horse" widely considered the greatest 1st baseman in baseball history. The powerful slugger belted 493 home runs, knocked in nearly 2,000 runs, posted a sensational .340 lifetime average, won a Triple Crown (1934) and incredibly knocked in over 100 runs in 13 consecutive seasons! His list of world-class achievements is seemingly infinite, and yet, for all of his batting accomplishments, Gehrig's immortal stature is still linked to his unfathomable 2,130 consecutive game-streak that ended abruptly in 1939 due to the incurable ALS disease that claimed his life in 1941. It was that illness that eventually led to his incomparable "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech on July 4, 1939 that still resides as baseball's "Gettysburg address".

No wonder elite hobbyists actively pursue his high-end collectibles, with this breathtaking 8" x 10" image that reveals a smiling "Iron Horse" grabbing three bats in a crouching position. Based on the dugout and background crowd, it appears to be either an exhibition game or spring training event, with the image portraying the finest possible clarity and resolution. You can literally feel Lou's "Goliath-like" power via this sparkling illustration that has eluded any obtrusive flaws, and still retains a majority of its original superior attributes. A simply magnificent pose of the mighty Gehrig, it conjures up memories of how this immortal "Big Apple" star stole the hearts of a seemingly infinite number of fans via both his unparalleled batting prowess and momentous "Lou Gehrig Day" speech that will surely echo for eternity!
