(LOT 119)
Surety Bond Put Up by New York Giants/Limited Organization

This lot offers an unsigned surety bond executed by the New York team organization to provide, as specified in the Articles of Agreement (sold in our Winter 2018 Auction), a fund insuring the payment of all player's salaries by the League in the event that a particular team or teams was unable to do so. The Players' league Articles of Agreement specified that each team would pay to the League Treasurer, by April 1, 1890, $5,000 to comprise this insurance fund. However, the Players' League Board of Directors must have amended the terms originally proposed in the Articles of Agreement because in lieu of an actual payment, it was decided that a $10,000 surety bond (that could be drawn upon if there was a player salary issue), would suffice, and be bound to F.A. Burnell who was treasurer of the Players' National League of baseball clubs. Since it is in a "draft" stage, this 3-page document has not been signed by any New York Limited officials and includes the typical three horizontal folds so typical for most 19th century documents. In our Winter 2018 auction, Surety Bonds were sold for the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo clubs, with this newly discovered New York Limited Bond the fourth such document for the eight Players' League teams.
