(LOT 117)
Articles of Agreement Document between NY Limited & Clarence L. Farrington for Brotherhood Park Superintendent Duties March 19, 1890

This March 19, 1890 Articles of Agreement "Draft" between the Players' League New York Limited Corporation and Clarence L. Farrington of Holyoke, MA. relates to the agreed upon Brotherhood Park "superintendent duties" Farrington's company will assume for a guaranteed year (March 19, 1890 March 19, 1891). Some of the major responsibilities and salaries outlined in the document are as follows: As Superintendent, Farrington will be paid the annual sum of $2,000, to be paid on a bi-monthly basis (1st & 15th day of every month) Farrington and his staff will not be guilty of any excessive indulgence in malt/spirituous liquors or any gambling Farrington is subject to the approval of the N.Y. Limited President (Van Cott) or Vice-President (Talcott) for any staff hires or discharges with the right to suspend any employee (other than the N.Y. Ball Players) for 24 hours without N.Y. Limited office approval On a daily basis, Farrington is responsible for reporting to the Treasurer (Talcott) all ticket sales revenues and depositing those revenues in the N.Y. Limited's Bank of Harlem.

A management member of the Superintendent's staff (if not Farrington himself) must accompany the N.Y. Limited team on baseball trips during the season and pay the related expenses including his own. All such costs shall be reported to the Treasurer/Talcott upon his return. Farrington is responsible for a $30,000 bond conditioned for the "faithful performance" of his duties as assigned in this Articles of Agreement. In typical fashion, this 6-page document includes three major folds, with all of the pages remarkably avoiding any obtrusive flaws (no tears, major surface blemishes, etc.). On page 5, an imposing New York Limited gold seal is affixed near the lower right quadrant and includes two crossed baseball bats and baseball. Directly to the left of the seal are the bold black fountain pen scripts of N.Y. Limited president Cornelius Van Cott and C.L. Farrington. The manila hued outside front cover boldly reads: "THE NEW YORK LIMITED with CLARENCE L. FARRINGTON ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT HENRY Bacon, Attorney, &c., No. 100 Broadway, New York City." N extremely interesting 1890 Players' League document, it stands as another sheer reminder of how the hallowed Polo Grounds was originally dubbed "Brotherhood Park" in an era when it housed some of baseball's greatest 19th century players!
