(LOT 550)
100% Complete & Scarce 1965 O-Pee-Chee 283 Card Set w/15 PSA Graded cards

When the renowned Canadian O-Pee-Chee card company decided to release their 283-baseball subject set in 1965 from London, Ontario, they broke a 28-year "dry-spell" for issuing a mainstream compilation (the last major O-Pee-Chee set was their popular 1937 die-cuts). With the 1965 subjects seldom found in any condition, O-Pee-Chee ultimately decided to only issue the first 283 subjects of the 598 cards included in the 1965 Topps set. Through a marketing agreement with Topps, the designs would be exactly the same, with the only subtle difference in the 1965 issue being the text "Printed in Canada" affixed near the verso's lower right edge. Any O-Pee-Chee cards are much scarcer than their Topps brethren and seldom surface for the taking, let alone pre-1970 issues that present a more significant challenge for the post-war enthusiast. Consider that the PSA Set Registry currently lists 25 Topps 1965 Complete sets versus only 2 Complete 1965 O-Pee-Chee gatherings! Considering the fact that the O-Pee-Chee checklist represents only 47% of the total 1965 Topps set (598 subjects), and that PSA has currently encapsulated nearly 220,000 1965 Topps subjects vs. only some 4,350 1965 O-Pee-Chee cards (only 2% of the Topps total); most would agree the 1965 O-Pee-Chee is "light years" scarcer than its Topps peer.

Simply stated, the excruciating chore of compiling a complete 1965 O-Pee-Chee set is a near impossible task, substantiating why this miraculous 100% complete 1965 O-Pee-Chee set offering stands as one of the more obscure pot-war cardboard gatherings extant. As we previously stated, PSA lists only a mere TWO complete sets on their prestigious Registry, with the #3 set only 44.17% complete! Predominately "raw" (268 raw cards), 15 cards have been encapsulated by PSA with their grades as follows: #6-NL RBI Leaders/Mays (PSA 5.5); #8-NL ERA Leaders/Koufax/Drysdale (PSA 5); #16-Joe Morgan Rookie/HOF (PSA 4); #50-Marichal/HOF (PSA 8); #95-Mazeroski/HOF (PSA 8); #110-Santo/HOF (PSA 4); #144-Kranepool (PSA 6.5); #207-Pete Rose (PSA 4); #235-Hinton (PSA 7); #243-Reds Rookies (PSA 6); #250-Willie Mays/HOF (PSA 4); #262-Daley (PSA 7); #269-Boiling (PSA 8); #271-Wert (PSA 8); #283-Whitfield (PSA 7)

The remaining 268 raw cards range from "PR" to "EX/MT" with the key cards and their approximate condition listed as follows: #3 AL HR Leaders (VG+); #62 Kaat (EX); #79 Checklist 1/MK (FR); #104 Checklist 2/NOT MK (VG); #120 F. Robinson/HOF (VG+); #130 Kaline/HOF (VG+); #134 Mantles Clutch HR (VG+); #155 Maris (VG+/EX); #160 Clemente/HOF (VG); #170 Aaron/HOF (FR+); #176 McCovey/HOF (VG); #193 G. Perry/HOF (VG), #205 Spahn/HOF (VG); #260 Drysdale/HOF (GD); #273 Checklist #4 NOT MK (Good/VG). Overall, the 268 raw cards approximately present themselves as follows: 5% PR; 25% GD; 38% VG; 10% VG+EX; 15% EX; 5% EX-NM; 2% NM. While the basic Mickey Mantle subject is not included in the O-Pee-Chee set since it was checklist#350, his #134 WS Game Winning & Record Breaking 16th WS HR in Game#3 subject makes a fine substitute. In total, there are 22 Hall of Famers, many of which have been highlighted above as either "PSA Graded" or "Raw" cards. A magnificent opportunity to own this ultra-rare 283-subject set, we highly doubt another 1965 O-Pee-Chee 100% complete gathering will surface for quite some time!
