September 1924 Walter Johnson Pitching Image - PSA Type I Underwood & Underwood Original Photo – Measures Approx. 5-1/2" x 10" - PSA Type I LOA

Most historians agree that Walter Johnson resides as baseball's greatest all-time pitcher. The "Big Train" racked up a staggering 417 wins and 113 career shutouts to support that claim, with the "Weiser Wonder" beginning his MLB career in 1907 with the Washington Senators. By the time the 1920's had rolled around, Johnson had basically done it all except for one minor thing; he had yet to claim a World Championship. That would finally change in 1924 when the Washington Senators captured the American League pennant and ultimately bested the N.Y. Giants in a tightly contested 7-game series. More than fitting, the "Big Train" would win Game #7 in relief, with this seemingly timeless image portraying Johnson's classic pitching motion during September of that legendary 1924 season.

Measuring approximately 5-1/2" x 10" the photo was issued by Underwood & Underwood (their renowned name is affixed near the lower right edge of the photo) and depicts an absolutely breathtaking portrayal of Walter Johnson having delivered one of his seemingly unhittable fastballs. Vivid resolution and near-perfect contrast highlight this 94-year old marvel that reveals Johnson donning his classic pinstripe uniform. The reverse side caption provides a detailed account of the Washington Senators leading the American League pack, led by the iconic Johnson. A "keeper" for sure, it conjures up memories of how the "Big Train" dominated hitters arguably better than any pitcher who ever toed the rubber! LOA – PSA/DNA Type I
