(LOT 8)
Amazing 1939 Play Ball PSA Graded Near-Set (159 of 161 Subjects/98.76% Complete) - #5 Set

on the Current PSA Set Registry – An Outstanding 8.55 Weighted G.P.A. w/Top Pop Bonuses!

One of the most momentous sets ever distributed was the 1939 Play Ball 161-subject compilation issued by the prestigious Gum Inc. Company (Checklist is numbered to #162, but subject #126 was inexplicably never issued, accounting for only 161 subjects). This landmark gathering includes a myriad of Cooperstown Inductees with its imposing black & white images and reverse side player "bio's" highly coveted by the hobby's most esteemed cardboard enthusiasts. Similar to many sets, high-numbered commons (#'s 116 – 162) carry a strong premium versus their earlier issued brethren, and their serious condition sensitivity (especially centering/skewed images) places a strong emphasis on capturing "tough to find" high-grade specimens. With that in mind, presented her is one of the premier 1939 Play Ball Compilations in the hobby, a 159-subject offering (missing only #26/DiMaggio & #92/Williams) that carries an incredible 8.26 Weighted GPA, 8.55 GPA w/Top Pop Bonuses and 7.928 overall set rating!

All of the 159 cards have been graded "NM/7" or better, a sheer testament to this set's remarkable high-grade prowess and the steadfast ability of its consignor to "cherry pick" virtually all of the 159 offered cards. While the overall Weighted G.P.A. stands at 8.25 (less the DiMaggio & Williams subjects), as previously stated, "Top Pop" Bonuses have elevated the G.P.A. to a staggering 8.55 level, with an amazing 42 subjects sharing the hallowed distinction as being the highest graded specimens ("0" Pop Higher). A summary of all the PSA assessments is as follows: Mint 9's (35); NM/MT+ 8.5 (1); NM/MT 8's (118); NM 7's (5). Nearly all of the offered cards reflect brilliant eye appeal, with the aesthetics presenting even beyond their already elevated grades. Of the total 18 Hall of Famers in the 1939 Play Ball set, we have included the 16 Cooperstown Inductees offered in this world-class compilation along with their respective grades, 10 of which carry the hallowed Mint 9 PSA assessment:

#3/Ruffing (NM 7); #6/Durocher (Mint 9); #7/Doerr (NM/MT 8); #30/Dickey (Mint 9); #39/Ferrell (Mint 9); #48/Gomez (Mint 9); #50/Gehringer (Mint 9); #51/Ott (Mint 9); #53/Hubbell (NM/MT 8); #55/Vaughan (Mint 9); #56/Greenberg (NM/MT 8); #82/Klein (NM/MT 8); #89/L.Waner (Mint 9); #94/Manush (NM/MT 8); #112/P.Waner (Mint 9); #143/Averill (Mint 9)

The remaining grades for all of the subjects can be viewed on PSA's Set Registry website with population status listed for all 159 cards (simply click on the #5 set with the 8.550 G.P.A. & 7.928 Set Rating for all details). Remarkably, 103 cards or 65% (two-thirds) of this esteemed gathering carry "Pop Higher" figures of 2 cards or less (42 Cards–NONE/0 Higher; 31 Cards–Only 1 Higher; 30 Cards–Only 2 Higher), and we cannot even begin to comprehend the daunting task of meticulously gathering these coveted cardboard gems. Extremely difficult to fathom for even the most sophisticated enthusiast, 35 or 22% of the total 159 offered subjects reflect a PSA "Mint 9" assessment, including 10 Cooperstown Inductees. A staggering statistic to say the least, consider that of the nearly 21,000 PSA encapsulated 1939 Play Ball cards, only a meager 1.7% (349 cards at the time this was written) have achieved the sanctified "Mint 9" grade, with 10% of that total represented in this exalted compilation that currently ranks as the 5th finest set on the illustrious PSA Set Registry! This group has an SMR Value of over $60,000. Add the DiMaggio and Williams in PSA 8's and you will own the PSA Register #4 complete set.
