(LOT 973)
1936 O-PEE-CHEE V304D #125 King Clancy – Series D (PSA NM/MT 8) – "1 of 4: Only 1 Graded Higher!

From 1933 thru 1937, the very popular Hockey V304 O-PEE-CHEE 180-subject set was released in five separate series labeled A – E. Commencing in 1936, the 37-subject "Series D" cards were issued as die-cuts whereby the player's image could be folded out to stand straight up. One of the most coveted players from the 1936 Series D issue is popular Hall of Fame defensemen Francis "King" Clancy, with his breathtaking PSA 8 specimen one of only four at this lofty plateau and a sole example graded higher! "King" Clancy played 16 seasons in the NHL from 1921 – 1937 with the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, capturing three Stanley Cups.

His seemingly timeless black & white image presents itself in near-immaculate condition, with the perimeter's razor-sharp edging including four pinpoint corners. Brilliant resolution and near-perfect contrast highlight this truly spectacular offering that has somehow managed to elude any glaring blemishes over the past 82 years. Its verso likewise reveals pristine-like attributes with the English and French brief "bios" completely intact and affixed to an unblemished surface. One of the key cards for this ultra-popular set, its awe-inspiring aesthetics justify the question: "why didn't it achieve a half-grade elevated grade that would place it at a level with the sole highest graded 8.5 PSA specimen?".

Yet, its current stature as "1 of 4" PSA 8's" for a series that is considered ultra-condition sensitive is more than sufficient for its standing as one of the finest 1936 "King" Clancy subjects extant!
