(LOT 444)
1909 T206 Brown Hindu Addie Joss "Portrait" (PSA 1)

This PSA 1 Addie Joss "Portrait" Brown Hindu offerings scarcity is justified by PSA's "Pop" chart listing only 8 such examples or a meager 1.2% of the approximate 700 encapsulated examples! Any card of Addie Joss merits significant hobby accolades, let alone an obscure T206 ad-back specimen carrying the eclectic Brown Hindu advertisement. One of the most underrated pitchers in baseball history is the beloved right-handed Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame twirler Addie Joss who owns the second lowest lifetime E.R.A. of all-time, a microscopic 1.89 figure (behind Ed Walsh's 1.84 mark).

Author of two no-hitters, in 1908 Joss tossed a perfect game against the Chicago White Sox when he ironically bested the legendary Ed Walsh 1-0 in one of the greatest pitched games in baseball history. Joss cards hold a special place with pure vintage collectors since he tragically passed away in April 1911, the victim of spinal meningitis. Strikingly similar to the legacies of Gehrig and Clemente, Addie Joss will always be best remembered for his sudden and tragic death, with its unforeseen circumstances far surpassing his incredible accomplishments as one of our National Pastime's finest hurlers.

Although his classic Carl Horner "Portrait" image has been compromised by a significant vertical crease running directly thru the center of the card, most significantly, the critical Brown "HINDU" advertisement retains a majority of its original bold and vivid qualities. A bona-fide "keeper" for any sophisticated T206 ad-back enthusiast, the opportunity to capture this cardboard obscurity seldom comes along!
