c.1960's Roberto Clemente Original Type 1 Globe Photos – Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 10" - PSA Type 1 LOA
Who could have possibly realized that when the great Roberto Clemente roped Jon Matlack's pitch into left-centerfield for his 3,000th hit on September 3, 1972, it would be the final regular season hit of his spectacular career. After the 1972 playoffs, Clemente would never again step on a baseball diamond for in one of baseball's saddest events, the great right-fielder would tragically die in a plane crash on December 31, 1972 at the tender age of 38, flying to Nicaragua to assist earthquake victims. Soon after, Clemente would immediately be placed in baseball's Hall of Fame, becoming the first Latin American/Caribbean player to receive that distinguished honor.
This brilliant 6-1/2" x 10" black & white Globe photo captures the classic Clemente batting swing that accounted for all of his 3,000 safeties, as Clemente's bat has just connected with another horsehide sphere. Remarkably, the crystal-clear image reveals no obtrusive surface flaws, with only a slight trim evident along the left edge. The reverse side exhibits four separate "Globe Photos" credit stamps, with this imposing 1960's Clemente image certainly destined to find a final resting place in any esteemed photo compilation! - LOA – PSA/DNA Type I
