(LOT 5)
Buck Ewing Signed Telegram Relating to Brotherhood Park Construction Costs – FULL PSA/DNA LOA

Here is one you don't see very often! This miraculous pencil written telegram includes a full note written by legendary Hall of Famer Buck Ewing with his near-impossible "Ewing" script placed at the end of the note in 8/9 strength! One of the two player representatives to the New York Limited Board of Directors (along with John Ward) and a major stockholder, the Board most likely appointed Ewing and Ward as primary overseers for the construction of Brotherhood Park. This Ewing Western Union Telegram reflects the severe pressure the team was under to complete the project, reading: "The framer Mr. Harmony wants six hundred dollars on account tomorrow to pay of carpenters and you better give it to him— they are rushing the work this morning—everything booming—more gone to Fordham - Ewing" (an area of the Bronx where evidently there was another project).

While the critical note and Ewing signature is uncompromised, we need to note that the upper right quadrant is missing a portion of its original paper stock most likely from the telegram being pulled off from a previous staple attached document. It is no secret that locating any signature from the hand of William "Buck" Ewing is regarded as one of the hobby's foremost daunting tasks. He is certainly on the "want lists" of nearly every advanced autograph enthusiast and why not? His coupled signature scarcity level and remarkable playing prowess combine to create and ultra-desirable thirst for one of the few surviving examples of his hallowed script. A lifetime .303 hitter, Ewing was arguably the finest 19th century catcher.

He had single seasons where he led the National League in home runs as well as triples, incredibly stroking 15 or more triples 5 times in his illustrious career. His 18-year career commenced in 1880 with the Troy Haymakers (along with Tim Keefe) and in 1883 he joined the New York Gothams, playing there until he "jumped ship" to the Player's League (PL) in 1890. After the PL league disbanded following the 1890 season, he returned to the Giants for two more seasons, eventually playing his final five seasons with Cleveland (2) and Cincinnati (3). While catching was his primary position, he demonstrated his remarkable versatility and athleticism by also playing all four infield positions, outfield and even pitcher! Every 19th century discussion involving this period's greatest players includes the iconic Buck Ewing, substantiating why elite autograph collectors painstakingly pursue his ultra-obscure script. Courtesy of Memory Lane, you are now afforded an absolutely golden opportunity to seize both a full hand- written note and "Ewing" signature from this ever-elusive Cooperstown inductee! - FULL PSA/DNA LOA
