(LOT 140)
1933 Rogers Hornsby PSA Type I Original Underwood & Underwood Photo – "Image Used for Hornsby's 1933 Goudey #119 Subject" - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" - PSA Type I LOA

Along with Ty Cobb, no baseball player could handle a bat with the sheer majesty of the great Rogers Hornsby who ended his career with a remarkable .358 lifetime batting average. For five consecutive seasons in the 1920's, Hornsby posted a miraculous .401 batting average, a record that will never be approached again. Therefore, it comes as little surprise that when baseball's all-time team is assembled by the foremost historians, Hornsby is typically placed as the premier 2nd baseman, with all due respect to Nap Lajoie and Eddie Collins. Somewhat underrated in the hobby, only now does it appear that collectors are "waking up" to this incredible player who just may reside as the greatest right-handed hitter ever. It is our pleasure to now offer this sensational 1933 Underwood & Underwood 7" x 9" PSA Type I photo of the "Rajah" that is the exact image used for his legendary 1933 Goudey #119 "fielding pose" subject!

Indeed, one of the hottest current collecting angles in the hobby is gathering original photos used for iconic cards, and this extremely rare offering certainly falls directly into that esteemed category. The classic Hornsby fielding pose reveals magnificent contrast and crystal-clear clarity as Hornsby reaches down to snare an oncoming ground ball. Minor flaws include a clipped upper right corner, as well as modest trims to the upper and right edges. The typical Underwood & Underwood "FILE COPY – DO NOT REMOVE" embossed text appears twice on the obverse side, but does not detract from the brilliant aesthetics emanating from Hornsby's pose. The verso includes the critical "Underwood & Underwood" credit stamp as well as a typed caption reading: "Rogers Hornsby – St. Louis Cardinals". A seldom surfacing memento, its undisputed presence as the image used for Hornsby's #119 Goudey subject merits it the highest hobby accolades! LOA – PSA/DNA Type I
