(LOT 13)
1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA 6 EX-MT

SWEET LOU!!!... With Babe Ruth omitted from the prestigious 1934 Goudey issue, its two most renowned subjects just happened to be New York Yankees immortal 1st baseman Lou Gehrig who was represented on multiple cards (#'s 37 & 61). That said, presented here is the more popular and valuable Lou Gehrig "Portrait" pose #37 Goudey, graded a PSA EX/MT 6 and portraying absolutely breathtaking aesthetics beyond the grade! Henry Louis Gehrig's legacy goes far beyond his statistical achievements. Tragically, his incredible career was cut short by the deadly "ALS" disease (now more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) which took his life at the young age of 37.

Yet, for all of his "on the field" accomplishments including 493 round trippers, a .340 lifetime batting average, and nearly 2000 RBI's, he will always be best remembered for his 2,130-consecutive game streak, accounting for his hallowed "Iron Horse" nickname. Furthermore, his iconic "Luckiest Man On The Face Of The Earth" farewell speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939 will forever be considered our National Pastime's Gettysburg Address. It is for all of these reasons that the most advanced enthusiasts actively seek his most desirable artifacts, with this awe inspiring Goudey offering qualifying as one of his most sought-after cardboard gems.

This museum worthy PSA 6 masterpiece depicts a classic Gehrig portrait pose reflecting crystal-clear clarity and a radiant yellow background that reveals the richest possible hues imaginable. Gehrig's fine facial toned colors are extremely sharp and reflect perfect contrast, almost to the extent of creating a "3-D" like image. The imposing image is well-centered between four bright white borders, and the popular "Lou Gehrig says" scripted text is bold and vivid. The corners exhibit right-angle formations more consistent with a "NM/7" example, with the only noticeable flaw being a diminutive toning/soiling "spec" situated on the upper right border.

The final exclamation points are relatively clean surfaces and the verso's bold green verbiage with this card emanating eye appeal superior to its rather strict technical assessment. In closing, the unique combination of the Gehrig's superior "on the field" achievements and his unparalleled courage have left an indelible mark on the game itself; likewise placing him at a pinnacle-like level with passionate hobbyists. More the reason to place the final bid on this magnificent "Iron Horse" keepsake that via its world-class aesthetics merits the highest hobby accolades!
