(LOT 714)
1936 Yankees Dugout Team Picture w/Gehrig & a Rookie DiMaggio - Original Type I Underwood & Underwood Photo – Measures Approx. 8" x 10" – PSA Type I LOA

Here's one you don't see very often! Rarely does a team photo surface with virtually all the players lined up across their dugout steps. Such is the case for this absolutely remarkable 1936 Yankee team picture taken before a 1936 World Series game at the Polo Grounds. The 1936 season would see the Yankees call up their star centerfielder Joseph Paul DiMaggio and he would quickly join Yankee captain Lou Gehrig in leading the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 1932. Led by an astonishing 6 Cooperstown Inductees on the playing field (Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dickey, Ruffing, Lazzeri, and Gomez) as well as their Hall of Fame manager and coach, Joe McCarthy and Earl Combs respectively, the Yankees would win 102 games, coasting to the American League pennant.

The fall classic would then see the "Bronx Bombers" capture the first of four consecutive championships, besting the New York Giants in six games. The 8" x 10" black & white image portrays Lou Gehrig first and foremost on the far left, with the remaining 22 players/coaches and batboy including notable Hall of Famers such as Lefty Gomez (directly next to Gehrig); Joe McCarthy (6th from the left), Joe DiMaggio (10th from the left) and Tony Lazzeri (3rd from the right), just to mention a few. The flipside includes the Underwood & Underwood stamp as well as a small caption, with superb contrast and resolution highlighting the team image.

This would mark the first of three consecutive seasons in which Gehrig & DiMaggio would strike fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers, with Gehrig's tragic ALS illness forcing him to retire in early 1939. This classic team image truly resides as an outstanding depiction of the seemingly "unbeatable" Yankee squad that reads like a "who's who" for our National Pastime's illustrious Hall of Fame!
