(LOT 712)
Brilliant 1961 Mantle/Maris Original Type I N.E.A. Photo (Newspaper Enterprise Association) – Measures Approx. 7" x 9" – PSA Type I LOA

No baseball record was more sanctified that Babe Ruth's single season home run record when in 1927 the "Bambino" walloped 60 round trippers. In the 1930's, Foxx and Greenberg came close when they each hit 58, but the record continued to stand for 34 years until 1961 when Roger Maris defied logic and blasted 61, besting the "Babe" by one. What made that summer of '61 even more thrilling was the fact that Maris' legendary Hall of Fame teammate, Mickey Mantle, matched him blow for blow until and injury sidelined the "Mick" in mid-September, all but ending his run at the record.

To that point in baseball history, no two players captivated a nation more than Mantle and Maris, battling "neck and neck" down the wire like two thoroughbreds fighting it out in a Kentucky Derby stretch run! Their home run dual is one of baseball's greatest mementos, and the summer of 1961 will forever be embedded in the hearts of avid baseball enthusiasts. It is for all of these reasons that hobbyists pursue any 1961 artifact of these two Yankee legends, with this breathtaking 1961 Original Type I 7" x 9" photo one of the finest we have ever come across. Issued by the Newspaper Enterprise Association in August 1961 (their stamp is affixed to the back with the photo accompanied by a PSA Type I LOA for ironclad authenticity), a nearly immaculate Mantle & Maris "back-to-back" batting image graces the obverse side.

Impeccable contrast and crystal clear clarity can make you "slip a beat", as these two Home Run "gods" portray their immortal batting stances and mighty lumber. Atypical snow white borders and no glaring surface flaws complete one of the most captivating Mantle/Maris photos extant; with its brilliant image placing us back to an era when these two icons turned the baseball world upside down via their relentless pursuit of the "Bambino's" exalted 60-homer mark!
