(LOT 703)
Extremely Rare 1934 Rice-Stix Dry Goods Co. Quickpoint Pen of Dizzy & Daffy (Paul) Dean

Throughout the 1934 and 1935 seasons, the Rice-Stix Dry Goods St. Louis manufacturer distributed various artifacts depicting the dynamic pitching brother duo of Dizzy and Daffy (Paul) Dean to promote their products. Various advertising posters, baseball cards and other keepsakes were regionally issued donning the legendary images of these two imposing pitchers, with this extremely rare "Quickpoint Pen (5" long)" one of the historic items issued during the 1934 season. That would be the year Dizzy Dean would post 30 wins, and it would take 35 years before the next pitcher would accomplish that incredible feat (Denny McClain's 31 wins in 1969). Daffy Dean would claim 19 victories that same season, with the two brother's total 49 wins between them to help the Cardinals capture a championship. Dizzy Dean, a legendary Hall of Fame pitcher, will forever be considered one of the most popular and admired players to ever grace a baseball diamond.

By the age of 26 he had already won an incredible 134 games and was on his way to being a sure 300 game winner until a line drive in the 1937 All Star game off the bat of Earl Averill struck his toe. Consequently, Dizzy altered his pitching motion in favor of his injury, resulting in several arm injuries that curtailed his HOF career. His younger brother, Paul "Daffy" Dean, never amounted to the iconic stature of "Dizzy", winning only 50 games in a nine-year career. St. Louis Manufacturer's seized the moment of this historic 1934 season and placed the images of Dizzy and Daffy on anything possible, with this spectacular pen seldom surfacing in the hobby. The pen's "Cap" reveals two black & white portrait images of these amazing hurlers as well as a red scripted "Dizzy and Paul Dean Shirts"; with both affixed to a baseball illustration. Black verbiage encompassing the baseball image reads: "SOLE DISTRIBUTORS OF DIZZY AND PAUL DEAN SHIRTS".

Directly beneath the baseball image (towards the center of the pen) is the following bold red text: "COMPLIMENTS OF PHIL WILENZICK – RICE-STIX DRY GOODS CO.". It should be noted that existing Rice-Stix pens are somewhat unique for they bear the names of the respective salesmen to whom they were originally issued to, with this pen initially belonging to salesman Phil Wilenzick. The final compliment is the brilliant silver "clip that shines like an uncirculated silver dollar and engraved as follows: "QUICKPOINT - SAINT LOUIS". A stupendous keepsake from the Cardinal's legendary 1934 championship season, it serves as a steadfast reminder of how these two "lovable" brothers captured the hearts of a captivated nation!
