(LOT 178)
Extremely Rare 1960 Mickey Mantle Jumbo Stadium Pinback w/Ultra-Scarce Blue Background – Measures Approx. 3-1/2" in Diameter
Here's one you don't see very often! Offered here is one of the rarest Mickey Mantle pinbacks in the hobby; a 1960 Jumbo Stadium Pinback measuring approximately 3-1/2" in diameter and portraying the ultra-obscure blue background. To the best of our knowledge, no more than 1/2 dozen of these obscure Mantle pins exist, and we cannot imagine ANY of them reflecting the near-mint+ aesthetics emanating from this magnificent pinback. Sold at Yankee Stadium, the most meticulous pin collectors painstakingly seek this eclectic marvel, with the handful of existing copies seldom surfacing for the taking.
Add the coupled facts that it represents the majestic "Commerce Comet" and its condition/aesthetics conservatively border at a Near-Mint+ level, it certainly qualifies as a Cooperstown worthy pinback. The scarce baby blue hued background and classic black & white Mantle portrait pose reveal no major blemishes whatsoever, reflecting virtually all of their original factory issued attributes. The circumference rim is completely intact and no major rust is evident on the relatively clean gray hued metallic verso. Issued one year before Mantle and Maris would embark on their legendary pursuit of the Bambino's single season 60-homer record, it unquestionably resides as one of the most nebulous Mantle mementos, and worthy of an esteemed place in any world-class pinback gathering!
