(LOT 82)
1953 Topps #244 Willie Mays PSA 8 NM-MT

MAYS!!!... The "Say Hey Kid" played in only 34 games in 1952 on account of his military service; yet Topps still decided to reward his faithful following by issuing a 1953 Mays subject. This highly coveted keepsake depicts one of the most popular Mays images as appears to be revealing his iconic "basket catch" fielding pose. Presented here just happens to be one of the more formidable copies of this classic Topps card, a remarkable PSA 8 specimen that has only been bested by a mere 3 examples! Ironically, Willie Mays would not play a single game in the 1953 season, missing the entire campaign due to his devout armed services duty in lieu of the Korean War. Fortunately for the seemingly countless number of his captivated young fans, his 1953 Topps #244 subject would give them hope for the upcoming 1954 season that would mark his glorified return.

The card itself portrays a magnificent Mays lithographic image, reflecting outstanding crystal clear clarity and contrast between super clean white borders. The well-centered illustration does slightly favor the upper left edges, but well within the parameters of PSA's strict grading guidelines for a "NM/MT-8" specimen. Scintillating corner tips, vivid print registration, sparkling hues and near-immaculate surfaces complete this brilliant offering that has defied 64 years of potential wear. One of the most desirable Mays cards in the hobby, its potential value continues to rise with this "pack-fresh" museum worthy keepsake now available for the taking!
