(LOT 45)
1887 N175 Gypsy Queen Mike Dorgan (PSA 7) - The SOLE Dorgan Copy Graded by Any Professional Grading Company & the HIGHEST GRADED Gypsy Queen for ALL Subjects!

In 1887, the New York based Goodwin & Co. tobacco firm utilized baseball player cards to promote their Gypsy Queen and Old Judge cigarette brands. Actual player sepia toned photos were pasted on stiff "blank Back" cardboard, not only as a sales incentive, but to protect the cigarettes via the stiff cardboard stock that was used. While Gypsy Queen specimens utilize similar poses found on Old Judge cards, they are considered much scarcer, with only an approximate 25 – 30% of the 500+ Old Judge subjects discovered in the obscure Gypsy Queen format. Presented here just happens to be the FINEST Gypsy Queen subject in existence, a remarkable "small version" PSA 7 of New York right fielder Mike Dorgan in an "arms folded" position.

We cannot overemphasize the significance of this "unique for the grade" offering! Not only does this suffice as the ONLY graded Dorgan on both the PSA or SGC "pop carts", but neither of these grading companies lists another Gypsy Queen subject at this level or higher. Simply stated, you are now viewing the supreme N175 Gypsy Queen subject on the planet! Mike Dorgan was a formidable outfielder for approximately a full decade, with his best seasons spent with the National League's New York Giants. Unfortunately, an 1887 knee injury eventually ended his career and tragically claimed his life when he contracted blood poisoning from a related knee operation in 1909.

His sensational representation on this "one of a kind" for the grade rare Gypsy Queen offering will unquestionably be an infinite testament for this popular outfielder. An "arms folded" pose typically seen on his Old Judge Cigarette card (N172 card# 132-13) depicts crystal clear clarity for the distinctly defined sepia toned image. His period style uniform portrays all of its original visual attributes including the ruffled pantaloons, striped jersey, and 19th century cap. Atypical for Gypsy Queen specimens, the image is well centered between super clean borders, and the "Gypsy Queen" print at the top of the card is bold and vivid.

Beneath Dorgan's hallowed illustration is his name, team, position and the Goodwin & Co. Cigarette advertisement, all of which depict near-immaculate legibility. Sharp edging, precision cut square corners, no surface blemishes and a relatively clean blank back complete this miraculous 19th century keepsake that reigns supreme as "the best of the rest" Gypsy Queen specimen. To reiterate, NO OTHER N175 Gypsy Queen card has currently managed to achieve a near mint or better grade, with this pinnacle offering proudly stand tall as the finest of its kind!
