(LOT 43)
1931 W517 #4 Babe Ruth – Throwing "Blue Tint' (PSA 8)

Ultra-popular with collectors, W517's were distributed in vertical strips of three cards with each subject measuring approximately 3" x 4". Many of the games stars are depicted in this set via sepia-tone or blue tint poses, and similar to all 1920's and 1930's cardboard issues, Babe Ruth resides as the set's most coveted and valuable subject. His unparalleled achievements earned him two subjects in the W517 compilation; a portrait and throwing pose "Bambino" card with the throwing pose subject presented here in a spectacular PSA 8 holder. One of only five at this exalted tier, only a meager 3 specimens have managed to outdistance this world-class offering! Simply stated, Babe Ruth's cardboard artifacts have skyrocketed in value because he stands "above the game itself.

His majestic 60 and 714 single season and lifetime home run totals, while no longer an all-time record, continue to be iconic home run figures. He set World Series pitching records before his major assault on ballpark fences, and his overall persona stole the hearts of millions of young aspiring ballplayers during his 21-year playing career. Furthermore, without Ruth's sheer existence, our National Pastime may have completely deteriorated in light of the 1919 "Black Sox" Scandal, with all of the above justifying why a countless number of enthusiasts actively seek his vintage cardboard gems. Ruth's classic "blue tint" throwing image portrays breathtaking resolution and contrast, with no major flaws evident on the obverse side surface.

The extremely well centered "Ruthian" illustration is framed by clean borders and a razor sharp perimeter including four pin-point corners consistent with the technical assessment. You can still see the upper and lower edge dotted lines, and the blank back is super clean. A remarkable 86-year old memento and synonymous with the "Sultan of Swat's" baseball stature, it proudly stands as one of the finest W517 Ruth's on the planet!
