(LOT 40)
Ultra-Rare Ty Cobb 1914 E&S Publishing Co. Postcard (PSA 5) - The ONLY Cobb Encapsulated by ANY Professional Grading Company!

In 1914, the E&S Publishing Co. of Chicago issued a series of postcards that depicted an action photo and related cartoon drawings of various ballplayers in blue ink on the front. The backs of the cards reflect the standard postcard backs. To date, only 11 subjects have been identified, yet as with most obscure pre-WWI issues, additional players may still be discovered. Included on this scarce checklist are the like of Joe Jackson, Christy Mathewson and Ty Cobb, with only a SOLE Ty Cobb example encapsulated by ANY professional grading service. It is our pleasure to proudly offer that single Ty Cobb specimen in a PSA 5 holder; a card that stands as a "unique" graded artifact from this eclectic set!

The achievements of the immortal Ty Cobb easily place him as one of the finest players in our National Pastime's glorious history, justified by his eternal place as one of baseball's five 1936 Hall of Fame charter members. Cobb broke into the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers in 1905, playing in a mere 41 games while hitting a paltry .240. Quickly, Cobb bounced back in 1906 to bat an impressive .316, the first of an unfathomable 23 consecutive years in which he exceeding the .300 benchmark standard. Throughout his incomparable 24 seasons, he led the American League a record 12 years in batting average including an incredible 9 consecutive seasons from 1907 thru 1915!

He also happened to exceed the exalted .400 mark three times, with all of the above totaling to an unimaginable .366 lifetime average. The offered cardboard rarity provides an imposing portrait portrayal of the "Georgia Peach", a pose not found on any of his mainstream cards. Also, strikingly similar to the 1938 "Heads Up" Goudey issue are small comic-like comments relating to Cobb's unparalleled playing prowess, mixed in with various cartoon caricatures. The corners still retain a majority of their original square formations, and the edging is sharp.

No major surface blemishes are evident with a super clean postcard verso the final exclamation point for this possible "one of a kind" rarity. While we cannot say with 100% certainty that another un-graded copy isn't safely tucked away in an esteemed private collection, what we do know is this amazing offering truly stands as the SOLE professionally graded example, earning it bragging rights as one of Ty Cobb's rarest pre-WWI cardboard marvels!
