CIVIL WAR GENERAL!!! Carte de Visite (CDV) was a popular photographic format in the mid-1800s. These were small, albumen prints mounted on cardstock, roughly the size of a modern business card, approximately 2-1/2" x 4". Produced by famous 19th century American photographer Mathew Brady, known for portraits of significant figures, including US presidents, military leaders, and other notable personalities, especially during the Civil War era.

Brady's CDVs were not only prized for their subjects but also for the quality of the photography, often featuring his distinctive studio stamp. Brady CDVs are highly collectible due to their historical importance and rarity, and this Robert E. Lee example is no exception! Signed R. E.
