(LOT 6)
1934 Goudey #61 Lou Gehrig PSA 8 NM-MT

'34 GEHRIG!!! "I'm not a headline guy. I know that as long I was following Ruth to the plate, I could have stood on my head and no one would have known the difference." – Lou Gehrig. An articulate Lou Gehrig quote summing up his decade playing in the shadow of the larger-than-life Babe Ruth. This magnificent 1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig PSA 8 NM-MT offering stands in no shadow and instead spotlights a lofty stature that has been bested only by five PSA examples! No esteemed baseball card gathering could possibly be considered complete without a high-grade Lou Gehrig Goudey specimen residing as one of its centerpiece attractions. Two Gehrig Goudey subjects were included in the 1933 and 1934 landmark gum sets with #37 offering a cheerful Gehrig portrait image and a classic batting stance of the Iron Horse on #61 for the '34 release.

Gehrig captured the Triple Crown in the same year the Goudey Gum Company issued this landmark batting subject, as Lou paced the Junior Circuit in most offensive categories including average (.363), home runs (49), RBIs (166), OBP (.465) & SLG (.706). With The Babe's virtual departure by 1934, along with Jimmie Foxx and Hank Greenberg, Gehrig was now regarded as the most feared slugger in baseball. Ultimately a Cooperstown inductee, Lou Gehrig tallied an outstanding .340 lifetime batting average, 493 round-trippers and 13 consecutive seasons with 100 RBIs or more! He teamed with both Babe Ruth and Joltin' Joe DiMaggio to lead the Yankees to seven world championships over his stellar 17-year MLB career. Sadly, ALS cut down the mighty Yankee at only 37, but his indelible mark was cemented when his humility and courage took center stage on July 4, 1939 when he delivered his venerable "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech to a sold-out Yankee Stadium crowd.

Donning his classic Yankees pinstripe flannels, this well-centered image only reveals a hint of partiality toward the left edge, between four super clean borders. Gehrig's crystal-clear batting pose is virtually flawless, set against a brilliant cool mint green background. Ultra-sharp corner tips, fine perimeter edging, a vivid "Lou Gehrig Says..." caption situated in the lower bold blue text box, no unsightly surface flaws and the back's bold green typography are the final compliments justifying the PSA 8 grade. The awe-inspiring Iron Horse batting image and world-class PSA 8 NM-MT assessment complete a momentous dynamic duo!
