(LOT 603)
1912 S81 Silks #89 Grover Alexander SGC 3 VG

SCARCE GROVER SILK!!!... Presented here is the ultra-scarce 1912 S81 #89 Silk of the immortal Grover Alexander, one of only ten such examples in any grade listed on SGC's census report (PSA does not encapsulate S81 Silks). Distributed in 1912 by the Helmar Tobacco Co. as premiums for their Turkish Trophy cigarettes, S81 Silks are among the most brilliant early 20th century collectibles. Measuring approximately 6-3/4" x 8-3/4", these silk scarcities include brilliant pictures of 25 of the game's top players. Coming off of his outstanding 28-win 1911 rookie campaign, Alexander was embarking on a career for the ages that would see the legendary hurler win a NL record 373 games (tied with Matty) while capturing an unprecedented three consecutive Pitching Triple Crowns from 1916-17! The classic pitching pose first seen on Grover's M101-2 premium remains basically unscathed, and considering no T3 Turkey Red Alexander exists, it is only these two mainstream issues that boast this iconic image. In typical fashion, the notable blemishes are fraying along the horizontal edges, and what appears to be a diminutive pulled thread near the upper left edge. One of Alexander's rarest keepsakes, its 1912 distribution date precedes his 1914 Cracker Jack and Fatima subjects, arguably sufficing as his true inaugural issue!
