(LOT 1962)
1836 President James Buchanan Hand-Written Twice-Signed Letter PSA/DNA LOA

An incredible handwritten, twice-signed letter from our 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan, on May 14th, 1836, in part reads, "I am getting very tired of Washington, but God knows we shall be able to adjourn. The House moved very slowly. I would not be astonished if we should sit until nearly the end of June." Written over 185 years ago, this letter has been signed at the end with an extra autograph on the front of the letter, relinquishing the President from having to pay for postage, hence the word "FREE" on the front of the envelope. We call this a FREE FRANK, which means to mark a piece of mail with an official signature or sign indicating the right of the sender to free mailing.
