(LOT 1847)
1957 Broadside Featuring Satchel Paige Barnstorming Tour Through North Dakota - Incredibly Scarce and Significant

PAIGE BROADSIDE!!! By his own account and considering that statistics were sparse at best among the sand lot, semipro, minor league and Negro League systems pre-World War II, Satchel Paige estimated that he pitched in more than 2,500 games, posted 2,000+ wins, threw for over 250 teams and tossed 250 shutouts. Based on the fact that Ol' Satch first pitched professionally in 1926 and hurled his final baseball in 1966, Paige's records, while seemingly inflated and just plain unbelievable, could be relatively accurate given his penchant to pitch year-round, barnstorming across the US, Latin American and the Caribbean at virtually every level. His dominance was legendary, especially in the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs, leading to his ultimate signing with the Cleveland Indians on his 41st birthday in 1948. Paige became the first African American pitcher in the American League pitching for the Indians.

He had a 6-1 record with a 2.48 ERA that year for Cleveland, and the Indians won the World Series. His final appearance came in an official game in 1965, when he pitched three scoreless innings for the Kansas City A's against the Boston Red Sox, allowing only one hit. He was 59 years old. The broadside has an intense bright pink background measuring 13" x 21" and proudly proclaims "Satchel Paige Most Fabulous Character in Baseball." The broadside is in satisfactory condition, with some expected superficial creases and age soiling, none of which detract from the incredible eye appeal of Paige's 9-inch full body pitching pose! The broadside advertising the barnstorming game between "The Satchel Paige All-Stars and the Portland Twins", a local North Dakota amateur or semi-pro team, is a valued memento from an earlier era, touting one of the very best pitchers, and entertainers, of all time.
