(LOT 1138)
1928 W502 #26 Lou Gehrig Three Bagger Ad Back PSA 3 VG

THE IRON HORSE!!! The ultra-eclectic 1928 W502 Hand-Cut "anonymous" issue includes some ad backs exhibiting "ONE BAGGER", "TWO BAGGER" and "HOME RUN" captions. Measuring 1-3/8" x 2-1/2", the cards in this 60-subject set are strikingly similar to the 1927 York Caramels and various 1928 Ice Cream issues. Presented here is a super scarce PSA 3 Gehrig W502 "THREE BAGGER", with PSA's population report not distinguishing pop counts for the three different ad backs. Gehrig's classic portrait pose is mesmerizing, and no obtrusive surface flaws are evident, with the grade due to even corner wear and negligible border discoloring. The verso reveals a "THREE BAGGER" caption and reads: "Return to Storekeeper and Exchange for a Sponge Base Ball." One of the Iron Horse's scarcest cards, it was issued the year he and the mighty Bambino would lead the Yankees to their second consecutive world championship, with Gehrig's 147 RBIs pacing the Junior Circuit!
