1908-09 Rose Company Postcards Eddie Plank SGC 1 PR

RARE PLANK POSTCARD!!! In 1908 and 1909, the Rose Company produced a set of postcards considered to be one of the most ornate cardboard relics extant. The Rose Co. aggressively advertised in 1908 trade newspapers, announcing they would be offering 12 different players for each of the 16 MLB teams (originally 192 subjects). Later updates included eight additional MLB players as well as a 14-card set featuring players from the New York State League's Scranton Miners, updating the total known subjects to 214. One of the set's rarest and most coveted players is the immortal HOF southpaw Eddie Plank, presented here in an SGC 1 holder. One of only four known Plank examples (all SGC), this particular offering appears to have been postmarked July 17, 1908 (the 8 is somewhat faded). Of significant note is the classic Eddie Plank portrait image, originally struck by Carl Horner and made famous by his iconic T206 subject. While this obscure offering does exhibit widespread creasing, areas of paper loss, corner layering, and five strands of clear tape on the postmarked verso, its undisputed rarity is the most prevalent issue. Indeed, the notion of try to find another one reigns supreme, with this ever-elusive keepsake truly residing as one of Gettysburg Eddie's rarest issues!
