1909-11 T206 Sherry Magie (Error) Portrait Piedmont 150/25 PSA 3 VG

SCARCE MAGIE ERROR!!! While the T206 Honus Wagner is the hobby's undisputed "Holy Grail", the remaining three subjects from the T206 "Big Four" brethren (Eddie Plank, Joe Doyle NY Nat'l and Sherry "Magie" Error) truly are neighboring "Mona Lisas". These illustrious rarities are the unparalleled subjects of the distinguished T206 "Monster Set", and obtaining them is such an excruciating task that many collectors are more than content with assembling 520 of the 524 subjects. Yet, there are a number of sophisticated hobbyists who will stop at nothing in their relentless pursuit of obtaining all 524 T206 cards. Unfortunately, rarely do these cards become available with stellar aesthetics, with meticulous enthusiasts patiently awaiting the next opportunity to capture at least one of these "Big Four" gems exhibiting exceptional eye appeal. Courtesy of Memory Lane, that esteemed Sherry "Magie" error card is now available for the taking, with this splendid PSA 3 marvel boasting aesthetics consistent with most VG-EX examples. Its recent value has soared to stratospheric heights, with another PSA 3 VG specimen fetching $37K in 2022 and a PSA 2.5 realizing a resounding $38K likewise in the winter of 2022. Finding VG or higher examples for the condition-sensitive "Magie" subject is surely a painstaking chore, with this Piedmont 150 subjects/Factory 25 memento an extremely obscure offering.

To clearly comprehend the scope of the "Magie" error card, one needs to fully grasp its true origin. While Sherry Magee was a formidable player for 16 years, his stellar efforts on a baseball diamond have still fallen short of HOF stature (many baseball historians still support the notion of Magee being worthy of a permanent home in Cooperstown, NY). Fortunately for future T206 enthusiasts, the Virginia Factory 25 manufacturers of Piedmont Cigarette's inadvertently spelled his name "Magie" in their inaugural 150 series 1909 release of his prized tobacco subject. Indeed, erroneously utilizing an "i" instead of the first "e" in his last name immediately etched in stone Magee's eternal popularity amongst advanced collectors. While the company quickly corrected their error, cardboard history was already written in stone, with a number of "Magie" error cards already released to the tobacco smoking community. So, there you have it: a fourth legendary T206 card to forever chase and an heirloom so sanctified, it's one of the esteemed cards included in PSA's Top 2500 Sportscards hobby guide. Other than the Wagner, Plank, Cobb, Young, Johnson and Mathewson T206 images (all legendary Hall of Famers), no T206 portrait pose is considered more popular than Sherry Magee's Carl Horner image affixed to the iconic T206 "Magie" error. We cannot overemphasize the sheer eminence of this grandiose artifact, with its overall eye appeal outdistancing the PSA 3 assessment.

Magee's stoic portrait image is outstanding, highlighted by its crystal-clear clarity and tranquil facial hues that are set against a super-eye-pleasing olive green background. The timeless image reveals excellent top-to-bottom positioning, with a modest favoritism towards the left edge between four bright white borders (a majority of Magie error cards reveal skewed images). For full disclosure, there is a light diagonal crease situated in the lower left quadrant, and had it not been for this negligible wrinkle, this momentous offering would most likely be residing in a PSA 4 holder. Even corner wear is consistent with any VG-EX vintage card, and the relatively clean front and back surfaces have eluded any obtrusive flaws. The final superlative is the flipside's extremely bold midnight blue Piedmont 150 Subjects/Factory 25 advertisement. Aesthetically pleasing T206 "Magie" error cards are rarely available via public auction, making this PSA 3 T206 "Big Four" prize one of the most visually appealing examples you will ever encounter and worthy of a final resting place in any world-class T206 gathering!
